Beginning
This blog’s intention is to be a “how to” guide for young homeowners with a conscience and a shallow pocket book. The idea came when I started to buy my first house about five weeks ago. FHA required some “lender required repairs” which at first I thought was going to great, the bank was going to find all the things wrong with the house and fix them at no out of pocket cost to me. This turned out to be a catch 22 which I am still fuming about. The contractor they hired to kill the moss on my roof, just poured bleach all over my roof (which inevitably when down my rain gutters, into the soil, percolating into the stream that parallels the property) Being a socially conscience young professional, the “lender required repairs” continued to be incredibly painful for me from the cheap carpet, to the replacement tiles- none of the decisions were made with time enough or the decency of the contractor (eh-hum- Straighten Up Contracting) to make a socially conscience decision without gobs of money that I, a young professional working in the non-profit world, just didn’t have. It is for this reason, I will document my trials and tribulations as a new young homeowner, fixing up my 1980’s home in SW Portland with social responsibility and on a shoestring budget – On a Greenstring. Here are pictures of me when I finally got my keys and the moment that started it all.
