Bye Bye Piles of Paper

January 13th, 2012 | Green Remodel, Links | 0 Comments

I am a magazine clipper. I have piles and piles of “very important” & must read articles to go through …. that I have never had time to pick up again. As a part of completing the office in 2012 and bookshelf organization in the New Year, I am sifting through that pile and pinning anything worth remembering and recycling the paper copy.

Here is the glorious pile of papers I was able to part with after using Pinterest to organize it all online:

Migrated to the World Wide Web here:

One of the pages I had clipped from a Real Simple.

It’s was called “the best new trends at your fingertips”.

Lord knows I can use all the help I can in that department…….aaaaaand since you are reading this…. maybe you could use it too. There was no way to Pin this page – so here are the retyped for your enjoyment:

When people were walking through the house and the basement – I really wanted every homeowner or potential homeowner to see how simple each measure is to achieve and how they affect the way a home operates.

So I made these! I taped these up around the house and basement:

and now I’m sharing them with you. If the writing s too small you can click on each one and it will open in a new window a lot larger:

$100 Kitchen Cabinets

January 6th, 2012 | DIY, Green Remodel | 0 Comments

I found a cabinet at the ReStore that is perfect for the kitchen sink in the basement. It was a good height AND it didn’t have doors on it so I only had to pay $20 for it. I wanted all the doors to match by using all ReStore/ReBuilding Center cabinets so in order to do that – I was prepared to make doors.

I don’t know why I didn’t take a photo of the whole cabinet – but this is all I got.

I had Miracle Mark come install it so that it would sit level and the granite would sit perfectly.

I bought 2 sheets of “cabinet grade” plywood from Home Depot. It’s what the Home Depot crew told me to pick up. It was only $14.99 per sheet.

The open spaces in the cabinets were measured and the doors were measured just a little bit larger.

It took 4 of us to comedically get 8 doors cut on a table saw. So there is no visual evidence.

Sanded both sides of the doors:

So there were no “splinters” left.

Then we painted the doors:

And then I made my weekly trip  to the ReBuilding Center to uncover this hidden box:

With these little beauties:

for $0.50 each!

I wasn’t as lucky with the hinges. I bought hinges from Builders Hardware Supply for a couple dollars a piece and screwed them all together. Easy Peezy Chicken Breezy:

They aren’t the most detailed kitchen cabinets, but I find them to look modern and simple.
